If you aren’t familiar, the term “pwned” comes from the gaming world and is short for “perfectly owned”, which basically means one has dominated or humiliated their opponent. For technology blogger Troy Hunt, the term now applies to those of us who have been victimized by a breach. He has developed a web site called HaveIBeenPwned.com which you can use to determine if one of your online accounts has ever been breached. Simply enter the email address or account name and Troy will search through over 5 billion accounts that have been breached since 2007. Five billion sounds like a lot of accounts, but this only represents the breached data that has been dumped onto public websites, which does not include data from some highly publicized breaches at Target, Home Depot or Anthem.
